What would you do if you were given an empty storefront space in the Loop? This Spring, we used it as a research center, working studio, and place to hold weekly exhibitions. We also held a few screenings, promoted performance art, and sold our publications, as well as others by artists from around the world. Thanks to the Pop Up Art Loop folks for their generosity and assistance – May 1st is our last day!

Throughout Version 10, students from the MFA AKV/St. Joost (The Netherlands) will use the space for a base of operations, studio work, performance and actions.

"Exothermia and Shadow Play"

Exothermia & Shadow Play is a program of short films/videos and installations that focus on fire, light, fireworks, and/or shadows and darkness. SpiderBug is a mobile short film festival organized by Catie Olson and Erik Brown that initiates film screenings that focus on specific themes, often science based, that encourage mixed media and interactivity with the audience.

Today, (C)-TAS-ers present another fabulous round of ambitious works, just for you. We'll provide the art, the drinks -- also just for you -- and, at 8pm, a very special presentation by POCKET GUIDE TO HELL TOURS' Paul Durica. Paul will talk about hobos, from human parasites to Charlie "The Little Tramp" Chaplin. He'll bring a light projector and wear a charming hat. He'll teach you to eat things from cans. Come! Come see some art and hear some songs and get deloused. It's all rad -- and it's all free!

James Bruce King is a part time cab driver, artist, writer and sometimes homeless 60+ year old gentleman with a lot on his mind.

(C)TAS is pleased to present a selection of Mr Kings works on paper that are screen shots for a novel he has been working on that depicts contemporary fairy tales in the Kingdom of Daley. Using shamanistic visions, Alice in Wonderland, pot holes, Harold Washington, the Daley Center and many other local symbols in his work, Bruce weaves a schizophrenic tale of conspiracy, desperation with his parafictional autobiography.

In 2001 bruner and bay deconstructed the built environment of Chicago with flatform: A perspective reclamation project connecting concept with form and structure with content. Now for 2010 b&b are pleased to have transcoded the flatform archives to DVD with stunning clarity and fidelity.

The remaining signed and numbered flatform packs will now include this DVD along with the full color booklet, show card, button (1 of 6), and VHS for only $15.

Take a peek at the lives of inhabitants and the transgressions they commit in the privacy of their little homes.

Bio
Ania is a performance and video artist who is fascinated with voyeurism, surveillance, architecture and dance. Since 2005 she has worked as one half of 3 Card Molly, an interdisciplinary group that explores history, technology, female strength and vulnerability through the media of performance and video. Their work has been shown at the Chicago Cultural Center, Link's Hall, Millennium Park, and other venues in Chicago, Michigan and Canada.

Anja Jamrozik was born in Kraków, Poland in 1986. She spent two years in Chicago before leaving to live on the east coast for the next dozen years. During that time she lived in Pennsylvania and Connecticut and completed a degree in psychology and cognitive science at McGill University in Montréal. She returned to Chicago to pursue a doctorate degree in cognitive psychology at Northwestern University where she studies abstract and relational language. Her interest in language and painting stems from their ability to highlight certain details of a scene while obscuring others. This is her first time showing in Chicago.

Dear friends,

I am posting an open call for artists who include performative art into their work, whether it be narrative, video, new media, technological, comedy, or just straight up repetitious. The exhibition will be sometime in March, though I haven't set a date. It will take place, here, at the (Con)temporary Art Space, Chicago. Please email me if you are interested. This will be a one-night event in which we will all gather and absorb the installation/performance/video/new media work of artists in Chicago and beyond!

We began work on our space this past Sunday. It had a previous life as a Ritz Camera store. We were lucky the blue neon cameras came with the place free of charge. The opening is in less than a week. Check back for details on hours and events soon.

The (Con) Temporary Art Space:
A Multi-use Studio and Artists Workshop
208 S Wabash
Chicago

The (Con) Temporary Art Space, due to open February 15th, 2010, will be an avenue for discussion, research and action. The former retail space will be used as a working studio by cultural workers, producers, artists and designers for projects they are working on collectively and individually. The Public will be able to absorb these presentations as well as share their ideas about contemporary art. The (Con)Temporary Art Space will function as a information center and a place to learn about Chicago's diverse art ecology.

In addition to hosting public programs such as film screenings, lectures, and workshops, The (Con) Temporary Art Space will also incorporate the following projects and components:

Info Bureau - The Info Bureau will provide materials, fliers, books etc., for the public to pick up in order to conduct their own self guided tours. Artists will have the opportunity to create their own personal "guides" and maps for distribution to the public.

An Other Chicago - An in-depth cultural mapping and directory project, this interactive wall map will be a resource of spaces, places and cerebral territories that represent the diverse cultural ecology of Chicagoland. A version of this map will eventually be published and distributed in the Spring 2010 as part of Version festival and Proximity Magazine.

Co-Working Studio - Working artists will be able to utilize the space for meetings, personal work, group projects, as well as to contribute to the An Other Chicago project. This temporary studio is an experiment in collaborative production.

The Concept Shop - The space will include a Concept Store to distribute and display artifacts made by Artists; working artists and students will operate the space on a daily basis. The shop are will display books, journal, magazines, art and other ephemera for sale to the public.

Exhibition Room - Members of the (Con)Temporary Art Space group will each curate short run exhibitions featuring artists and works of their choosing. Shows will rotate frequently.
